VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE

By Roseanna Torres

On Tuesday, May 1, 2018, students and faculty from the Dental Hygiene Department at
City Tech participated in the CUNY Wellness Festival in NYC. The event which was open
to all CUNY students, faculty and staff free of charge provided blood pressure screening,
vision and hearing testing and non-invasive dental screenings.

The dental component included head neck, extraoral, and intraoral screening, home care
instructions and referrals. . Professors Davide and Rivera and Freshman dental hygiene
students: Nazrin Akbarova, Melissa Damasco, Dirien Santos, Roseanna Torres performed in
excess of 50 dental screenings.

My experience volunteering at this event was extremely positive. It was a way to
demonstrate what I have learned and it helped build my confidence in educating the public.
There is a quote by Pablo Picasso which states that “The meaning of life is to find your
gift and the purpose of life is to give it away.” As dental hygiene students, we love what we
do and the best way to express that is to share it with others. I certainly hope that there
will be many more opportunities to volunteer our services as dental hygiene students. It is
an essential part of our education and career development and provides a valuable service
to the community.

Learning and Connecting in Basel, Switzerland

In the last week of June, 2016, I attended the 20th International Symposium of Dental Hygiene in Basel, Switzerland. This is a three-day event put together by the International Federation of Dental Hygienists (IFDH), and is a unique opportunity to connect with dental hygiene professionals across the world. I learned that by being ADHA members we are all IFDH Association Members.  The IFDH represents twenty-nine countries from around the world, and holds a symposium every three years. The next meeting will be in Seoul, Korea, 2019. Much like the Greater New York Dental Meeting, (GNYDNM) there are lectures, exhibits, case presentations, social events and plenty of research posters to browse.

There was so much to learn while at the Symposium in beautiful Basel! While it is nearly impossible to choose the most memorable takeaway, I most enjoyed learning that America’s ToothFairy is now the World’s ToothFairy; please see http://www.ncohf.org/world . Last year alone 2.2 million children and caregivers were reached and given oral hygiene care products through America’s ToothFairy/ World’s ToothFairy! On that same note of social responsibility and projects, there will be a Social Responsibility Conference in Florence, Italy Summer of 2017. This meeting will be for any oral health care provider interested in engaging in such conversation and having influence. More information on that conference can be found here: http://www.ifdh.org/newsletter/ifdh-enews-winter-2016.html

I hope to see you at the GNYDM!
